Amazon has been shifting its small stores to less than a year since the opening of its first public website in Seattle on January 22. On Tuesday, the technology giant opened its ninth Amazonian shop and the second in San Francisco. The company's official line is that customers love the experience and the company loves its technology.
The opening of the new 1,750-square-foot store comes a week after Amazon unveiled another Seattle location that was much more compact, with only 450 square feet.
Regardless of size or city, Dileep Kumar, vice president of Amazon Joe, said the company was thrilled to see it so far.
Kumar told GeekWire: "People find it very convenient to shop in the store." "We have noticed this in every city … there is this temporary hesitation when customers are about to leave, because they think," Can you actually leave? Have we really finished? "They can then go out, then go out and tell people the experience they had and then more people come."
With three other stores in Chicago and another to be opened in 2019, Kumar said customer behavior was consistent across sites.
"Customers are busy, they are in a hurry, they want good food, they want to get in quickly and quickly," he said. "Our premise when we launched Amazon Go is that these things will be global and that it will change."
While the existing stores range in size from the new small option to an area of 2,300 square feet, Kumar said that this fact is more related to the available real estate space and the surrounding neighborhood than any big plan. Just Walk Out Technology – which relies on smartphones, overhead cameras and weighing sensors in shelves – works the same regardless of store size.
While the built-in option opens up the possibility of building more office buildings, lounges, etc., Kumar was not prepared to speculate on where and how to guide the company to the growth of Amazon Amazon in the new year and beyond.
He said that while customers in Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago are accustomed to this concept, technology continues to improve.
"Automated learning techniques – and Just Walk Out are no exception in this regard – tend to get much better with more data and over time." The algorithm is designed to improve, "Kumar said. "The good news is that what we're seeing, despite a new choice and new customer behavior, the technology is working flawlessly." The algorithms continue to improve over time as we get more data. To another store, we've seen a lot of similarities in the performance of Just Walk Out Technology, and we're thrilled about it. "
The new Amazon Joe is located in San Francisco on 98 Post Street and is open from Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00. Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm. In addition to products made in the Amazon, the store will store local favorites such as Urban Remedy, Dosa by Dosa, Munchery, Green Heart Foods, La Boulangerie, Kikka Sushi, Starter Bakery and Clara's Kitchen.
